Around the Baixa Limia region

This route will lead us through the so called Baixalimia, in the southern tip of the Province of Ourense, at the border with Portugal, having the chance of visiting and walking through a part of the BaixaLimia-Serra do Xurés Natural Park, created in 1993 and that has an extension of 30.000 hectares. Likewise, the Park was declared by UNESCO in 2009 as a cross-border biosphere reserve for the richness of its forest ecosystems and peat bogs, in addition to the presence in the area of endemic species that meet Atlantic and Mediterranean characteristics.

Visits

1. Santa Comba de Bande Church

It is a Romanesque jewel declared a national monument in 1921. Traditionally it has been attributed to a Visigoth origin that some situate around the year 675, although recent studies move its origins to after the Arab invasion of 711. Externally it seems to have undergone numerous modifications which, however, have not altered the essence of its original internal structure. It is a small church of Greek cross plant with a series of horseshoe arches on the transept and fresco paintings in the apse. In any case, the visit is justified because it is a representative example of the Spanish Romanesque architecture..

2. Aquis Querquennis Roman Camp

It is part of a Roman archaeological complex formed by a military camp of great dimensions, a road mansion or Traveler's Inn and thermal baths. The surroundings are crossed by the Roman road via Nova or via XVIII that joined Braga with Astorga. The AquaeQuerquennae-Via Nova Interpretation Centre is located on the site, which houses the Querquernia museum or Baixa Limia district. The site has guided tours and offers more information on the phone number 988444401 and in www.fundacionaqvianova.com

3. Santa María la Real de Entrimo Church

Elegant Church of Churrigueresque Baroque style and large proportions, erected perhaps, at the end of the 17th or early 18th century. Prominent for the originality of its decoration, mainly on the side covers and the main facade, divided into four bodies in which stands a series of spiral columns. It is a unique specimen for the beauty of its decoration that reminds us in certain aspects of the facades of the monasteries of Sobrado and Oseira.

4. Lindoso Castle

Crossing the homonymous reservoir and the border line we arrive at Lindoso village in which his Castle stands out since 13th century, as well as the 62 'horreos' - raised barns at the village center. Further, from the Castle we can enjoy some unique and beautiful wiews of Xurés mountains.
